From monastic chapel to cathedral

Originally, Saint-Pierre was the chapel of a monastery, next to the present faculty of medicine. It became a cathedral in 1536, when the archbishopric of Maguelone was transferred to Montpellier. Its massive look, its high walls and its porch supported by two enormous pillars give it the air of a fortress, marked by the wars of religion that bloodied the region. Restored several times, it has kept this unique character.

The monumental porch, supported by two cylindrical pillars, is the cathedral's most spectacular element, almost without equivalent in France.
