Seafront Promenade

Welcome to Arcachon’s stunning seafront promenade! You’re walking along one of the most beautiful coastal avenues in France, stretching for several kilometres beside the famous Arcachon Bay. First laid out in the early 20th century, this walkway links the town’s three iconic jetties: Pierre Lataillade, Thiers, and La Chapelle. Built between 1845 and 1903, these elegant piers are reminders of the golden age of this seaside resort, developed by the Pereire brothers. To your right, take in the extraordinary sight before you: Arcachon Bay. This unique European lagoon covers some 18,000 hectares at high tide, about the size of Paris, but shrinks to just 6,000 hectares at low tide, revealing vast stretches of sand and mudflats. The tidal range here can reach up to four metres, creating an incredibly rich ecosystem. At the heart of the bay lies the Île aux Oiseaux, or Bird Island, with its two famous cabanes tchanquées, stilted wooden cabins built in 1945 and 1948. This 3,000-hectare island shifts shape with the tides and storms, and is a haven for birdlife, with 150 recorded species and as many as 400,000 birds stopping here during migration. Arcachon Bay is also the beating heart of oyster farming. This age-old tradition supports around 280 oyster farms spread across 30 ports and villages, producing between 7,000 and 10,000 tonnes of Pacific oysters each year. The oyster beds you might spot in the water cover more than 1,800 hectares. The bay’s territory spans 786 square kilometres and includes 12 towns, from La Teste-de-Buch to Lège-Cap-Ferret, all ringed by Europe’s largest cultivated forest, 850 square kilometres of maritime pines that scent the air with their resin and shelter the bay from Atlantic winds. Designated a Natura 2000 site, Arcachon Bay is home to remarkable biodiversity: seagrass meadows, salt marshes, dunes, pine forests, each habitat with its own wildlife, from terns to egrets, sole to sea bass, samphire to marram grass. As you continue your walk, you’ll enjoy the bay’s 36 kilometres of sheltered beaches, where the water is calmer and warmer than the open ocean, perfect for families. This easy-going lifestyle, combined with a rich architectural heritage and a preserved natural environment, is what makes Arcachon Bay one of the most sought-after destinations in Nouvelle-Aquitaine.
