The Porte Stanislas

The Nancy audio-guided tour presents the Porte Stanislas, one of the seven gates of the city. This monumental arch is part of the great embellishment plan desired by Stanislas Leszczynski, the former king of Poland who became Duke of Lorraine.

The mark of Stanislas

Stanislas Leszczynski, to whom King Louis XV, his son-in-law, had entrusted the Duchy of Lorraine, wanted to give Nancy a princely mark. He launched a vast programme of embellishment of the city, of which the gate that today bears his name is one of the achievements. Built in the eighteenth century, it marked one of the entrances of the city, in a classical style in keeping with the monuments desired by the duke.

What there is to see

The Porte Stanislas, in light stone, presents an elegant triumphal-arch architecture, adorned with sculptures and inscriptions. It testifies to the urban ambition of Stanislas, who transformed Nancy into one of the finest classical cities in Europe. It is a fine landmark for understanding the history of the monumental entrances of the city.
