Sylvante Postern
The Sylvante hill, where you're standing, is an integral part of Valence's history. The last traces of the fortifications that surrounded the city during the Middle Age can be found here. The Sylvante postern, which used to regulate access to the city by means of a portcullis, is a large iron gate that lowered to close the passage. This monumental gateway actually linked the lower and upper parts of the town: at the time, it was essential to be able to block passage from one part to the other in the event of epidemics or conflicts between inhabitants. Picturesque and steeped in history, these stairs allow us to take a step back in time to the Middle Ages!
