The story of thalassotherapy in Royan began long before the word itself was coined in 1865 by Dr. Joseph La Bonnardière, who combined the Greek words thalassa, sea, and therapeia, treatment. It all started in 1816, when the first “bathers” arrived from Bordeaux, not for leisure but on medical advice. Inspired by the theories of English physician Richard Russell, these early visitors came to take “cold sea baths,” as brief as they were bracing, for their supposed therapeutic benefits. Picture those first patients, fully dressed in heavy wool garments, plunging headfirst into the icy Atlantic waves under the watchful eye of medical staff! A few years later, the arrival of the steamship changed everything, making it easier for Bordeaux’s elite to reach what was still just a modest fishing village. In 1844, the “Néothermes” opened in the first Foncillon casino, marking the official birth of thalassotherapy in Royan. Thirty years later, Dr. Auguste Guillon, a former mayor, had several open-air seawater pools carved directly into the rock at the Bec-des-Brandes in Pontaillac. These “bathtubs” cut into the cliff, still visible today along the Boulevard de la Côte d’Argent, were the direct ancestors of modern thalassotherapy centers. For the first time, organized treatments using heated seawater and the benefits of the marine environment were offered, attracting an ever-growing clientele. From 10,000 summer visitors during the Second Empire, Royan’s numbers swelled to 200,000 by the 1930s. The resort developed genuine medical expertise in the virtues of seawater: boosting the immune system, relieving rheumatism, and promoting relaxation. After the city’s reconstruction in the 1950s, Royan modernized its facilities, and today, with Thalazur on the Conche du Chay, it continues a tradition of more than 150 years of expertise.
