The American monument
The American memorial
A place of remembrance on the Tours audio-guided tour, this fine monumental ensemble stands on a plot that belongs to the United States, more precisely to the American battle monuments commission. The place calls for contemplation.
A tribute to the SOS soldiers
The memorial commemorates the help given by the American soldiers of the Service of Supply during the First World War. Raised in the 1930s, its cost and upkeep were entirely borne by the United States. The fountain was designed by the sculptor Henri Varenne.
What to see
The ensemble superimposes several architectural elements and reaches about seven metres in height, crowned with a gilded sculpture. The dedication pays tribute to the work accomplished by the American expeditionary forces. At the centre, a pillar bears the coats of arms of the towns that served as SOS bases, including Tours, which was its headquarters. View this place with respect.
