The Amiénoises

So iconic that they’re known as Amiénoises, these traditional terraced houses are a signature feature of the city. Built in the 19th century during the Industrial Revolution, these structures showcase characteristic red brick facades, tiled roofs, and elegant cast and wrought iron ornamentation. At the time, they were built to house workers from the textile industry, glassworks, metalworks, and other trades. They’re made up of a ground floor and a single upper level, usually with one or two windows facing the street. They might look alike at first, but each one is slightly different from the other. Back in the 1800s, those little details told you a lot about the people who lived there — and their place in society. Beautifully preserved since then, these Amiénoises are full of charm, especially in this district, where you’ll find some of the most authentic examples in the city.
