The Belfort Defenders Memorial

The Belfort Defenders Memorial on your left refers to the Franco-Prussian War that took place between 1870 and 1871. The four-metre high, granite and bronze structure was created by Jacques Robichon. At its centre is a bust of Colonel Denfert-Rochereau, better known by his nickname, the “Lion of Belfort.” He became a symbol of resistance, as he led the defence of Belfort with both soldiers and civilians. Just in front of the monument, you’ll spot a life-sized female figure in bronze, symbolising Renown — the spreading of someone’s glory and reputation. If you look closely at the bas-relief, you’ll see a depiction of the Lion of Belfort. The monument was inaugurated on December 31st, 1911, marking the 40th anniversary of the siege.
