The Grande Rue, artery of old ducal Nancy

A street born in the Middle Ages

The origin of the Grande Rue is said to go back to the fourteenth century, when Duke Ferry III decided to transfer his castle and develop the city. The street then became the major axis of the Old Town, lined with residences and shops. Over the centuries, it has kept its medieval layout and its role as the backbone of the old district, a witness to the ducal history of Nancy.

The Grande Rue can be walked on foot, along its old façades, its private mansions and its shops. It links the main monuments of the Old Town, from the Porte de la Craffe to the palace of the dukes of Lorraine, before reaching Place Stanislas. It is one of the finest walks to discover medieval and ducal Nancy.
