The Sainte-Chapelle of Chambéry

The Chambéry audio-guided tour invites you to quiet contemplation before the Sainte-Chapelle, one of the flagship elements of the château of the dukes of Savoy. From the outside, you can glimpse its apse and the tower of the great carillon, but its history deserves that you linger over it.

The former setting of the Holy Shroud

Built for the dukes of Savoy, the Sainte-Chapelle long housed the Holy Shroud, the famous cloth venerated by Christians, before it was transferred to Turin when the capital of the duchy was moved there. This prestigious past makes it a high spiritual place. The chapel is also endowed with a great carillon, one of the most important in Europe, whose bells punctuate the life of the city.

What there is to see

The interior of the Sainte-Chapelle, in Gothic style, reveals fine vaults and trompe-l'œil decors. Its tower houses the great carillon, whose concerts punctuate the year. A place of faith and memory in the heart of the château, it can be discovered with respect, during organised visits, and offers a precious testimony of the religious history of Savoy.

Practical information

The Sainte-Chapelle is within the château of the dukes of Savoy, in Chambéry. As the château houses the prefecture, the chapel cannot be freely visited; you must take part in a guided tour, with a charge, according to its own schedule whose hours may vary.
