A theatre born of a diverted bequest

In the nineteenth century, the Quimper bourgeoisie deplored the absence of a real theatre in the city. The story knew a twist in 1893, when a lawyer, Urbain Couchouren, bequeathed an orchard to his native city on the condition that a hospice for the elderly be built there. But the municipality, not very enthusiastic, preferred to carry out another project dear to it: the construction of this theatre. Despite not respecting the donor's request, the building came into being and finally offered Quimper a stage worthy of the name. Elegant, on the banks of the Odet, the theatre bears the name of the Quimper poet Max Jacob.
