The Monster of the market square
A small anachronism in the heart of the historic district, the Monster is an unexpected stop on the Tours audio-guided tour. Here you are face to face with this contemporary sculpture set on the market square.
A work by Xavier Veilhan
Created at the request of local shopkeepers by the contemporary artist Xavier Veilhan, this 4.80-metre statue links past and present. The sculptor drew inspiration from the fantastical creatures found on the coats of arms of medieval towns, while giving them a resolutely modern style.
What to see
Inaugurated in 2004, the work divides opinion: people love it or criticise it. But little by little, the market square has become, for many, the Monster square. Notice the striking contrast between this modern figure and the old facades surrounding it.
