The first department stores of Quimper

Around the cathedral, the Saint-Corentin square concentrates fine buildings. Among them, this corner building marked the opening of Quimper to commercial modernity. In 1901, the city acquired its first department stores; on the main square, the "Bazar du Finistère" sign was renamed in 1911 "Nouvelles Galeries Anglaret" by its owner G. Anglaret, a Quimper postcard publisher. On the model of the great Parisian and European department stores, the building was fitted out with taste: entrance enhanced by a glass canopy, galleries on several levels, hall open onto the roof and large windows highlighting the displays. The Nouvelles Galeries closed towards the end of the 1990s.
