Thérèse Neveu Santon Art Center

The Thérèse Neveu Santon Art Center is a recently renovated space that’s deeply woven into the town’s identity. It stands on the site of what used to be the home of Thérèse Neveu, Aubagne’s most celebrated santon maker. If you haven’t come across santons yet, they’re small clay figurines from Provence that traditionally depict characters from the Christmas nativity scene, like the Baby Jesus, the Virgin Mary, and the Wise Men. But what makes them truly unique is that they also represent everyday people: fishermen, fishmongers, woodcutters, washerwomen... all dressed in traditional Provençal attire. The very first santons were created in Marseille in 1775 using red clay from Provence. The tradition quickly spread to other towns in the region, especially Aubagne, which soon became a major center for ceramics and clay craftsmanship. The city still carefully preserves this heritage, showcasing the work of santon makers in various exhibitions and regularly hosting fairs and events to introduce this art to the thousands of visitors who pass through each year. Thérèse Neveu, who lived from 1866 to 1946, is considered the pioneer of the modern santon. She was the first to create figures outside the nativity story, inspired by the people of Aubagne she saw around her, and she dressed them in detailed, traditional clothing. She went on to create over a hundred different figurines, all of which she systematically fired in a kiln, a revolutionary technique at the time. That’s why she remains such an iconic figure here in Provence. Inside the building in front of you, you can discover how these beloved figurines are made and explore their fascinating history. The center also houses The Little World of Marcel Pagnol, an enchanting exhibition of more than 200 santons crafted by top regional artists. The display recreates scenes and settings that pay tribute to Pagnol’s world and the extraordinary talent of this legendary playwright. It’s an immersive experience that captures the heart of Aubagne’s traditions—an absolute must-see!
