From defensive towers to the castle

The name Tournelle comes from an old fortified tower of the wall of Philip Augustus which, with three others, sealed the access to the river in case of invasion, large chains being stretched between them. These towers were demolished and replaced by the Tournelle castle, nicknamed the Tower of the Galley Slaves, because the condemned were locked up there before their departure for the galleys, a past recalled with gravity.

The port now houses a shaded promenade and a pleasant garden, by the water. You enjoy fine views over the Seine, the Île Saint-Louis and the Île de la Cité. It is a relaxation spot favoured by Parisians, ideal for strolling along the river, away from the bustle of the upper quays.
