The town hall of Lille and its belfry
The Lille audio-guided tour has you discover the town hall and its belfry, erected in the heart of the Saint-Sauveur district. Built at the beginning of the twentieth century, they embody the industrial age of a city in full expansion.
A belfry of the industrial age
The belfry was built as the crowning of the town hall, completed shortly before, at the beginning of the twentieth century. The use of concrete, then in vogue in modern constructions, allowed the architect to give free rein to his imagination. More than one hundred metres high, this belfry is one of the highest in the region. It perpetuates the tradition of the belfries of the North, symbols of communal freedoms, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
What there is to see
At the base of the belfry, two sculpted giants, Lydéric and Phinaert, legendary figures of the founding of Lille, stand guard. You can climb the belfry up to its platform, which offers an exceptional panoramic view over the city and, in clear weather, as far as neighbouring Belgium. It is one of the finest viewpoints of Lille.
