Welcome to Utopia Cinemas, a major cultural institution in the city. Housed in the former factory of the Papal Palace, this arthouse cinema boasts 4 screens, showing films from around the globe. They also host talks, debates, and meet-and-greets with filmmakers. Utopia cinemas are independent theaters with locations in several cities, including Toulouse, Bordeaux and Montpellier. Here in Avignon they have two: the one in front of you, at the foot of the Papal Palace, and another on Figuière Street, housed in a former chapel. The first opened in 1994, and the second in 1976. Their film listings are varied and eclectic. Here, you can watch thought-provoking auteur films dealing with all kinds of themes, and then treat yourself to a delicious meal at their on-site restaurant! Continue along this little path, known as the Promenade of the Popes, and you'll soon reach the orchards of Pope Urban V, a small garden at the foot of the palace, dating back to the 14th century.
