A green stop on the Grenoble audio-guided tour, this fine square was dedicated to Victor Hugo, who died the year of its creation. Here previously stood the former Bonne barracks and the old rampart.

A square at first shunned

At the end of the nineteenth century, the relocation of the barracks and the demolition of the rampart freed up space to create a fine square surrounded by buildings. But when the plots were sold, no one was interested, the people of Grenoble considering the place too far from the centre. The town hall had to hold a new sale at reduced prices; well advised were those who invested then.

What to see

In the Belle Epoque, the cafe-concerts around the square made it a must-see. Recently renovated and replanted, it offers a popular and lively green space. Facing the fountain, admire the statue of Hector Berlioz, the composer from the Isere.
