The viewpoint over the port, in Ajaccio
From the jetty of the citadel, this viewpoint puts the stroller face to face with the horizon and offers the finest perspective over the old port of Ajaccio. The Ajaccio audio-guided tour stops here to admire the gulf, the three basins of the port and the red and white lighthouse that watches at the foot of the citadel.
The jetty, the gulf and the lighthouse
The jetty of the citadel puts you face to face with the horizon: it is the ideal place to immortalise the old port of Ajaccio. Situated in the gulf of Ajaccio, the port is composed of three basins, separated by a cruise mole. You have on one side the Port Tino Rossi, where the walk led you, the Port Charles Ornano on the other, and the basin of the Capucins, reserved for commercial boats, in the centre. Behind you, at the edge of the citadel, stands the red and white lighthouse, thirteen metres high, built in 1851. If you push as far as it, know that on leaving the lighthouse you can reach the ramparts and enjoy again a fine view, over the sea and the port on the one hand, over the citadel on the other. From here, the gaze embraces the ample curve of the gulf, the mountains that close the horizon and the silhouette of the town clustered around its port. The Mediterranean light, particularly soft at the end of the day, sublimates this panorama and makes it one of the finest of Ajaccio. It is one of these privileged viewpoints where you grasp in a single glance the intimate link between the town, its citadel and the sea. A belvedere and a perspective over the port, this viewpoint is a fine stop of the discovery of Ajaccio.
