The viewpoint over the Medieval City

Following the Carcassonne audio-guided tour, you reach one of the finest viewpoints in town. From the Pont-Neuf, built in 1840 facing the Pont-Vieux, a spectacular panorama unfolds over the silhouette of the Medieval City, outlined in the distance on its rocky spur.

A viewpoint born of the town's growth

The Pont-Neuf was built in the 19th century to provide a second link between the Medieval City and the lower town, while the Pont-Vieux had remained the only crossing of the Aude since the Middle Ages. Useful for traffic, the bridge also revealed this prized viewpoint, taking in the river, the green banks and the fortress in a single glance.

What there is to see

From the deck of the bridge, you can make out the count's castle and the imposing fortifications encircling the City, set off by the landscape of the Aude's banks, the river that flows through Carcassonne. The Pont-Vieux, just opposite, completes the picture. The spot is ideal for a photograph of the walled city, especially at the end of the day.

Practical information

The viewpoint is freely accessible from the Pont-Neuf, in the open air and at any time. The site is level and lends itself to a quick stop during the walk between the lower town and the City. No fee is required to enjoy the panorama.
