Watch Tower

Though much of Calais was destroyed during the two world wars, one proud medieval structure still stands: the Watch Tower. Dating back to the 13th century, it’s believed to have been part of the old castle’s defensive system. At 39 meters high, the tower served as a lookout post until 1905. It was a critical role—any lapse in vigilance could put the entire city at risk, and the consequences were severe. Over time, it was also used as a lighthouse and even as a communications post with a telephone relay system for 32 years. Unfortunately, the tower no longer meets modern safety standards, so it isn’t open to visitors. Nonetheless, it is still classified as a historic monument and remains a powerful reminder of Calais’s medieval roots.
