XXL Mural

Brace yourself. If you thought street art was limited to small, discreet pieces of graffiti, prepare to see it on a completely different scale. Here, the artists went big—very big.

Painted in 2023, this giant mural covers an area the size of a tennis court turned upright. The bold design grew out of a collaboration between two major figures in Brittany’s street-art scene: Jean Moderne, also known as RCF1, a veteran graffiti artist known for broad fields of color, and Yann Le Berre, known as L’Outsider, an École Boulle-trained artist celebrated for his precise graphic compositions. After the City of Lorient launched a call for projects, the duo was selected and spent ten days high above the ground in a lift, transforming 300 square meters (3,230 square feet) of blank wall into the artwork you see before you today.

Take a moment to explore the shapes and colors of this abstract composition. The primary colors stand out first, a signature of RCF1’s style that echoes the spirit of the Bauhaus movement. Against them, the black-and-white bands form a clear tribute to the Gwenn ha Du, the Breton flag, firmly grounding the work in Brittany.

Yet the mural is more than a graphic exercise. It was designed as a kind of visual map of the Lorient area. Hidden within its colorful abstract forms are poetic references to the Morbihan landscape, including the hardness of stone and Breton granite, the ever-present breath of the coastal wind, and the vast horizon of the open sea.
