A stop on the Riga audio-guided tour, the Cat House is immediately recognisable by its two black copper cats, perched atop its turrets with arched backs. Built in 1909, this elegant building blends medieval and Art Nouveau influences.

A legend of rivalry

What makes the house famous is above all the legend surrounding these sculptures. A wealthy merchant, offended at having been rejected by the prestigious Great Guild of merchants just opposite, is said to have had the cats installed with their backs turned towards the building, in a mocking posture. Faced with the scandal, the authorities are said to have finally demanded that they be turned around.

What to see

Today, the cats look towards the street, but their proud and rebellious attitude still recalls this story of rivalry and pride that turned the house into one of Riga's symbols. Look up to spot these two felines, among the most photographed in the city.

Practical information

The Cat House is in Riga's old town, opposite the Great Guild. A private building, its facade and cats can be viewed freely from the street.

Why cats on the roof of the house ?

According to legend, a merchant offended by the Great Guild had them installed with their backs turned towards it, as a provocation.
