Ghost Monument

I hope that ghost appearing out of nowhere didn’t startle you too much. This Ghost Monument is a contemporary bronze sculpture set against the former ramparts of the Old Town. Created in 2015 by Latvian artist Ieva Rubeze, it depicts a hooded silhouette, like a discreet and mysterious presence in the heart of the medieval district. Its understated and slightly enigmatic style really catches the eye, especially in the evening when the lighting enhances its ghostly appearance. The sculpture seems to emerge directly from the remains of the fortifications that once surrounded the entire city. Built as early as the 13th century, these defensive walls stretched for more than two kilometres and protected the historic centre, with towers placed at regular intervals and red brick arches still visible today, like the one you’ve just passed through.
