The Ghost monument

An unusual stop on the Riga audio-guided tour, the Ghost monument is a contemporary bronze sculpture leaning against the old ramparts of the old town. Created in 2015 by the Latvian artist Ieva Rubeze, it depicts a hooded silhouette, a discreet and mysterious presence in the heart of the medieval quarter.

An enigmatic presence

Its sober and slightly mysterious style draws the eye, especially in the evening, when the play of light reinforces its ghostly appearance. The sculpture seems to emerge directly from the remains of the fortifications that once surrounded the whole city.

What to see

Built from the thirteenth century, these defensive walls stretched over more than two kilometres and protected the historic centre, with towers at regular intervals and red brick arches still visible today, like the one you have just passed through. The ghost watches discreetly over these remains.
