St John's Courtyard

A history-laden stop on the Riga audio-guided tour, St John's Courtyard, or Jana seta, is a small inner courtyard in the heart of the old town. It occupies a very symbolic location, considered the cradle of the city.

The cradle of Riga

It was here that Bishop Albert, founder of Riga, established his first residence and the first church of the city. Of the original castle, only a few traces remain, but one can still see, by turning around, fragments of the old medieval fortification walls.

Surrounded by old buildings, cobblestones and cafes, the courtyard has become a calm and pleasant place, away from the tourist bustle, while keeping a history-laden atmosphere. It is the ideal place for a break closest to the origins of Riga.
