Neumünster Abbey

Neumünster Abbey is in the heart of the Grund district. In 1547, the Benedictine monks transformed the former St John's Hospital into a new abbey, as theirs had just been destroyed. During the French Revolution, like all religious buildings, it was requisitioned and the monks were evicted. The abbey became a prison, an orphanage and Prussian barracks before being transformed into a cultural centre for international meetings. The cloister, which you can visit for free, regularly hosts concerts, exhibitions and seminars. The abbey was also the venue for the signing of the Treaty marking the entrance of Bulgaria and Romania into the European Union in 2005.
