The Luxembourg audio-guided tour takes you to the Rham plateau, surrounded on three sides by the Alzette. Open to the public after five years of restoration work, this site is a true symbol of the city's military architecture.

From Vauban's barracks to the Prussians

During French rule, Vauban had the four Rham barracks built. At the end of the eighteenth century, about one thousand seven hundred men were in service there. Two centuries later, the Prussians built a fifth barracks behind the Rham wall. Once its military past was behind it, the site was restored to open to new uses.

What there is to see

The Rham plateau dominates the lower districts of the Grund, Clausen and Pfaffenthal, which it proudly overlooks. You discover the restored barracks, the ramparts and superb views over the Alzette valley. It is an ideal site to understand the scale of Luxembourg's defensive system.

Practical information

The Rham plateau is in the old town of Luxembourg, surrounded by the Alzette, above the lower districts. The site can be walked freely on foot; some accesses, on a slope, call for good shoes. The viewpoints are best discovered by day to enjoy the panorama.
