Rham Plateau

We are now surrounded on three sides by the Alzette. This is the Rham plateau, which is now open to the public after 5 years of restoration work. This site is a true symbol of the town's military architecture. During French rule, Vauban had the four Rham barracks built. By the end of the 18th century, there were around 1,700 men on duty here. Two centuries later, the Prussians built a fifth barrack behind the Rham wall. Once its military past was behind it, the Rham buildings were transformed into an orphanage before becoming a retirement home. Nowadays, the circular path of the plateau offers a magnificent view of the upper town and, in the distance, the Kirchberg , with its modern buildings housing European institutions.
