A courthouse become a place of culture

Built in 1907 in a neoclassical style, the building was the former courthouse of Fort-de-France. It today houses the Camille-Darsières space, a multicultural place partially open to the public, which includes a contemporary art gallery and hosts the workshops of the Sermac, a hub of cultural action introducing young Martinicans to theatre, dance and visual arts. The centre bears the name of Camille Darsières, deputy of Martinique from 1993 to 2002. The neighbouring square was once adorned with a statue of Victor Schœlcher, author of the 1848 decree abolishing slavery, taken down in 2020: a gesture that is part of a memorial debate recalling the part taken by the enslaved themselves in their emancipation.

What there is to see

The Camille-Darsières space charms with its neoclassical architecture and its fine inner patio, which comes alive during the festivities, notably during the carnival. One discovers there a contemporary art gallery and the effervescence of the cultural workshops. Facing the Victor-Schœlcher square, the place also invites reflection on the history of the island and the memorial debates that run through it.
