We’ll start with the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, one of Muscat’s major landmarks. Inaugurated at the beginning of the 21st century, it impresses with the harmony of its architecture, the finesse of its decoration and its monumental scale. Inside, your attention is naturally drawn to an immense handwoven Persian carpet and a spectacular chandelier, both remarkable examples of craftsmanship. Another key site is the Royal Opera House Muscat, a cultural showcase for the sultanate. This elegant venue hosts international performances while highlighting a contemporary Omani architectural style, with clean lines, pale stone and carved wood. Even without attending a performance, the building itself reflects Oman’s cultural openness. Now let’s leave the city behind for a moment and head towards Wadi Shab, one of the country’s most famous natural sites. After a walk through narrow, rocky gorges, pools of turquoise water appear, inviting you to swim, and the adventure continues to a hidden cave behind a waterfall, reachable only by swimming. Nearby, Wadi Tiwi offers a quieter atmosphere, with a road winding through traditional villages, palm groves and terraced fields, revealing a rural way of life that is still very much alive. Further inland, the village of Nakhal is dominated by its impressive fort, perched on a rocky outcrop. Well preserved, it allows visitors to imagine daily life and defensive strategies of the past, with the Hajar Mountains as a backdrop. Just nearby, the Ain Thowarah hot springs make for a pleasant stop, where warm water flows among palm trees and rocks. Back towards the coast, Bandar Al Khairan beach reveals a series of wild coves, perfect for swimming and snorkelling, far from the city’s bustle. Along the coastal road, the Bimmah Sinkhole is another striking sight, with its large basin of turquoise water formed by natural geological processes. And finally, the Hajar Mountains themselves, always present around Muscat, offer panoramic roads, perched villages and dramatic mineral-rich landscapes, revealing another side of Oman, cooler, quieter and more hidden. With all of this, you certainly won’t run out of reasons to stay a little longer in the Muscat region.
