Muttrah Souk

This elegant entrance leads into Muttrah Souk, one of the oldest and liveliest places in Muscat. For more than two centuries, this market has grown alongside the nearby port and the daily rhythm of the city. As you step inside, you enter a covered labyrinth, once so dark that it earned the nickname “the souk of darkness”. Today, improved lighting and wooden roofing added during recent renovations make the walk far more comfortable, while preserving the traditional atmosphere. Let yourself be guided by the scents of frankincense and myrrh, the colourful spice stalls, silver jewellery, khanjars, pashminas and handicrafts from Oman, India and beyond. Here, bargaining is part of the experience and is done with a smile, patience and mutual respect. If you lose your way, that’s perfectly normal, and even encouraged. Muttrah Souk is best discovered by wandering, watching everyday scenes unfold and taking your time. When you finally emerge, you’ll find the corniche, the sea and the port once again, and perhaps a few treasures to take home with you.
