The new Jewish cemetery of Cracow, a memorial of Kazimierz
The new Jewish cemetery of Cracow, on Miodowa Street, is one of the essential places to understand the history of Kazimierz. Vast and moving, it carries on the memory of the city's Jewish community. The Cracow audio-guided tour stops here to evoke, with respect, centuries of life and the wounds of twentieth-century history.
Opened in 1800
When the cemetery of the Remuh synagogue closed, in 1800, the community opened this new cemetery for its burials. Over the following two centuries, it became the main Jewish burial place in Cracow. Marked by the tragedies of the Second World War, it has since been restored and maintained, and remains an essential testimony to the Jewish presence in the city, both a place of contemplation and a page of history.
What to see
Beneath the trees, thousands of tombstones bear witness to the life of Cracow's Jewish community, in an atmosphere of calm and contemplation. Some headstones, broken then raised again, recall the ordeals the place has endured. The visit, free and open, is a powerful stage in the discovery of Kazimierz, to be walked slowly and with respect.
