Chinese Taoist temples

On both sides of this street, you'll see Chinese Taoist temples. The Chinese community on the island is nicknamed in Creole "les Sinois" or "les ROC," meaning Réunionese of Chinese origin. In these temples, they honour Guan Di, a legendary warrior who became a god. They celebrate the timeless values of courage, loyalty, and self-control. There's deep respect here for elders and ancestors, who are thanked for their ongoing benevolence. It’s more of a philosophy than a religion. Around June 21st, they celebrate Guan Di's birthday, the second most important festival of the year for Réunion's Chinese population, after Chinese New Year. Speaking of Chinese New Year, it's absolutely spectacular if you've never seen it before! It kicks off the spring festival and continues for 15 incredible days, ending with the beautiful lantern festival. You'll see ceremonies, martial arts displays, acrobatics, colourful parades, traditional dances, and amazing banquets. If you’re lucky enough to be here during the festivities, don’t be alarmed by the firecrackers, they’re meant to scare away evil spirits!
