The Chinese temples

The Saint-Denis audio-guided tour takes you between Chinese Taoist temples, on either side of the street. They bear witness to the presence of the island's Chinese community and are discovered with respect, in the calm proper to these places of devotion.

Reunion's Chinese community

The island's Chinese community, nicknamed in Creole the Sinois or the Reunionese of Chinese origin, comes to these temples to honour Guan Di, a warrior who became a god, and to celebrate the values of courage, loyalty and self-control. Elders and ancestors are particularly respected there. It is more a philosophy than a religion, put into practice in respect of traditions.

What there is to see

Around 21 June, a date associated with Guan Di, the second most important festival of the year for the population of Chinese origin is held, after Chinese New Year. The latter, a true spectacle of colours, dances and firecrackers, marks a highlight of the island's life. The temples, with their altars and traditional decoration, are discovered with respect for the faithful and the ceremonies.

Practical information

The Chinese temples are in the centre of Saint-Denis, on either side of the street. Active places of worship, their access may be limited to the faithful or open during certain ceremonies, notably around the Guan Di festival; it is best to check locally. A respectful and discreet attitude is required.
