From the church of the Holy Saviour to the cathedral

Built between 1829 and 1832 as the church of the Holy Saviour, it became a cathedral when the diocese of Bourbon was created; it is today the only one on the island. Its terracotta pediment depicts the martyrdom of Saint Denis, first bishop of Paris. Saint Denis is the best known of the cephalophore saints, that is, the beheaded ones, traditionally shown carrying his head in his hands.

The white facade, plain and elegant, and the sculpted pediment deserve attention before entering. Inside, the nave invites contemplation, in the simplicity characteristic of the island's religious buildings. The cathedral, surrounded by trees, is a landmark of the historic centre of Saint-Denis and a testimony to the religious history of Reunion.
