Le Barachois
The Saint-Denis audio-guided tour begins at Le Barachois, the northernmost district of the capital of Reunion Island. The word barachois means a rough little port: it was here, in the 17th century, that goods and travellers were loaded and unloaded, the starting point of the island's development.
From historic port to seafront
The site once developed by Mahe de La Bourdonnais, governor general of the Mascarenes (the archipelago formed by Reunion, Mauritius and Rodrigues), no longer exists today. The seafront has been turned into a leisure promenade, offering an ideal setting to admire the sunset. It is one of the liveliest districts of Saint-Denis.
What there is to see
The Barachois esplanade brings together the casino, children's play areas, a petanque ground and many relaxation spaces, along historic cannons facing the ocean. It is the favourite walking spot of the people of Saint-Denis, especially at the end of the day, when the light settles over the Indian Ocean and the surrounding mountains.
Practical information
Le Barachois can be seen freely, in the open air, on the seafront north of Saint-Denis. The promenade is accessible at any time and lends itself to a stop at sunset. Cafes, restaurants and play areas are found there; the establishments' hours vary by day.
