While we’re strolling along Medená Street, it’s the perfect time to talk about Slovak cuisine, because this little country in Eastern Europe is full of delicious surprises! One of the most iconic dishes you’ll find here is bryndzové halušky, a hearty plate of potato dumplings served with tangy sheep cheese, sour cream, and sometimes crispy bacon on top. It’s a local favorite, eaten regularly across the country, so trying it is a great way to eat like a true Bratislavan. If you prefer pasta, there’s also a version with cheese- and meat-filled dumplings that’s just as tasty. Other Slovak specialties include zemiaková placka, a savory potato pancake filled with meat and paprika, and kapustnica, a warming cabbage soup made with paprika and smoked sausage. In fact, cabbage is everywhere in Slovak cooking, right alongside potatoes and mushrooms, which you’ll see on most menus. For dessert, don’t miss the bábovka, a sweet, bundt-style cake similar to the Alsatian kouglof, filled with rum-soaked raisins and almonds. You might also come across apricot cakes, creamy rice puddings, crepes, caramel-drizzled cream puffs, or parené buchty, steamed buns filled with plum jam. And to wash it all down? Beer, of course! It’s served in pints by default here and has been brewed locally since ancient times. Just a heads-up: Slovak beers are often labeled with a different scale than you might be used to, a 10° beer here is about the same as a 4% beer in France. So don’t worry if the numbers seem high, they’re not necessarily stronger. Wine is also popular, especially white, with Tokaj being the most famous variety, made in both Slovakia and Hungary and enjoyed around the world. Fun fact: the Tokaj grape was reportedly brought to France by an Alsatian named Schwendi, which is why it’s now found in Alsace too! If you’re more into spirits, try the local vodka, the juniper-flavored borovička, a bit like gin, or slivovica, a strong plum brandy. Definitely worth a taste, but as always, drink responsibly!
