The Triple Bridge, symbol of Ljubljana
The Ljubljana audio-guided tour takes you to one of the places that best embody the city: the Triple Bridge. You are here at the crossroads between two Ljubljanas, the medieval one, with its narrow alleys, and the modern one, built after the great earthquake of 1895.
From a single bridge to three crossings
At first, there was here only one bridge, built of stone in 1842, crossed by carts, carriages and then the first motorised vehicles. With the development of the city, this crossing soon became too narrow. It was then that the architect Jože Plečnik intervened: rather than widening it, he added in the 1930s two pedestrian walkways on either side of the original bridge, creating this unique ensemble of three joined bridges.
What there is to see
The Triple Bridge links Prešeren Square to the Market Square and the old town, under the gaze of the cathedral. Lined with stone balustrades and lampposts, enhanced by descents to the banks, it is one of Plečnik's finest achievements. It is a place of incessant passage, ideal for photographing the river, the façades and the perched castle in the background.
Practical information
The Triple Bridge spans the Ljubljanica, between Prešeren Square and the Market Square, in the heart of Ljubljana. Reserved for pedestrians, it can be crossed freely at all hours and on the level. It is one of the most emblematic viewpoints of the city.
Why does the Triple Bridge have three crossings?
Because Plečnik added in the 1930s two pedestrian walkways on either side of the 1842 stone bridge, which had become too narrow.
What does the Triple Bridge link?
Prešeren Square and the modern city to the Market Square and the medieval old town, over the Ljubljanica.
