A contemplative stop on the Bangkok audio-guided tour, the San Chao Pho Ho Klong is a small Sino-Thai shrine whose name means the shrine of the spirit of the drum tower.

The three drums of old

In the time of Rama I, a nearby belfry housed three great drums: one to mark the hour, another to warn of fires, a last to announce war. True sirens of old, they symbolised the vigilance of the city and royal authority. The present shrine, built in 1966, perpetuates this memory and also honours an officer of the belfry who died in combat.

What to see

Tradition has it that the great drum is struck seven times to obtain a blessing. Particularly frequented by civil servants and soldiers who come to pray for their careers, this place recalls how much Thai beliefs blend Buddhism, animism and Chinese influences.
