The cathedral of Liverpool, in Liverpool
The cathedral of Liverpool is the Anglican cathedral of the city, the largest cathedral of the United Kingdom and one of the vastest of the world. The Liverpool audio-guided tour stops here, with respect, to evoke this colossal neo-Gothic building of red sandstone, raised throughout the twentieth century, whose tower shelters the highest and heaviest ring of bells of the world.
The neo-Gothic colossus of red sandstone
Here you are in front of the cathedral of Liverpool, whose dimensions alone command respect: it is the largest cathedral of the United Kingdom and one of the vastest of the world, nearly two hundred metres long. An Anglican building of neo-Gothic style, it was built in red sandstone throughout the twentieth century: begun in 1904, it was completed only in 1978, that is more than seventy years of works. It is the work of the architect Giles Gilbert Scott, who was only twenty-two years old when his project was retained, and who thus devoted all his life to this cathedral. The interior, of an impressive scale, raises the gaze towards high vaults and bathes in a subdued light filtered by magnificent stained glass. There is found the largest church organ of the country and, in the great tower, the highest and heaviest ring of bells of the world. From the summit of this tower, accessible to visitors, is offered a remarkable panorama over Liverpool and the estuary of the Mersey. A living place of worship, the cathedral invites to silence and contemplation under its immense vaults. At the other extremity of Hope Street stands the Catholic cathedral: the two buildings, one traditional, the other resolutely modern, dialogue like a symbol of openness between the confessions. A monumental cathedral and a place of prayer, the cathedral of Liverpool is a fine stop of the discovery of the city, to be visited with respect.
