Art Along the Waterfront

Along the waterfront, art spills out onto the streets as part of Immerse Yourself in the Arts, a public art trail created by the Port of San Diego. Fourteen outdoor art installations line the bayfront, turning it into an open-air gallery. The trail gets off to a striking start with Fish Tree, a vivid red sculpture that combines the silhouette of a tree with the shape of a fish, rising against a backdrop of sailboat masts.

A few steps farther, you’ll come to A Different but Loving Pair, standing like a totem covered in colorful mosaics. Bright and welcoming, the work plays not only with color, but also with its title, inviting you to see this “different but loving pair” from a new perspective. A little farther along is a more abstract piece made from aluminum, glass, and wood, which seems to be reaching toward the sun.

This group of four waterfront sculptures ends with Orange Tree, probably the most literal and conceptual of the set. The orange sculpture plays with the letters in the word “TREE,” which become visible from different angles. In doing so, it turns the tree itself into a visual game.

But there’s still more to discover. On your right, you may catch a glimpse of a huge wood-and-steel structure in the heart of Ruocco Park. This is Riparium, with suspended eucalyptus branches woven together to create shifting patterns of light and shadow.
