The Central Park Carousel is a major attraction, drawing children from all over the world! It opened in 1871 and quickly became a favorite with New Yorkers. The original carousel, powered by real horses and mules, operated until 1924. The one you're looking at was installed in 1950 and dates back to the early 1900s. It's one of the largest merry-go-rounds in the country, boasting 57 hand-carved horses! No wonder it's such an eye-catcher for the little ones...
