Cloud Gate, the famous Bean of Chicago

Nicknamed The Bean, Cloud Gate has become, within a few years, the symbol of Chicago. This giant mirror sculpture, set in the heart of Millennium Park, reflects the city's skyline and sky to the delight of visitors. The Chicago audio-guided tour inevitably stops here, so much does the work embody the playful, monumental spirit of the city.

A work by Anish Kapoor

Cloud Gate is the work of the British artist Anish Kapoor. Built between 2004 and 2006, after a temporary unveiling in the summer of 2004, it is made of polished stainless steel plates, assembled with no visible welds. Its drop or bean shape and its mirror surface distort the reflections of the city, creating a visual play constantly renewed by the light and the crowd.

What to see

People come under the Bean to play with their own reflection and admire the skyline distorted in the polished steel. The sculpture is surrounded by the lively esplanade of Millennium Park, a stone's throw from the park's other works and pavilions. It is one of the most photographed spots in Chicago, magical at any hour, especially at sunrise and sunset.

Practical information

Cloud Gate lies in Millennium Park, right in the centre of Chicago, reachable on foot and by public transport. It is an open-air work, freely accessible, with no ticket office, in a public park open for much of the day. On the level, it is easy to access; the surroundings can be very busy in high season.
