Chicago is the main city in Illinois, resting along the shores of Lake Michigan. Its seasons vary depending on continental climate, from freezing winters with heavy snowfalls to very hot summers. Expect minimal temperatures between -7°C and -3°C from December to February, and higher temperatures between 25°C and 30°C from June to September. Unless you want to admire the city's frozen lake and Christmas decorations, the best time to visit Chicago is between April and October.
No need to worry about where to begin! Our tours are designed as a loop, so you can jump in wherever you are. The navigation system and audio-guide will automatically adjust to your location. However, if you happen to be nearby, we do have a preferred starting point: The Cloud Gate (The Bean)/ Millenium Park
Grant Park North Garage - 44 Michigan Ave/ Millennium Train Station Parking in the USA is generally easy, given that streets are wide and parking spots even wider. If you're used to Europe, you'll quickly realise that Americans are friendly and good drivers. However, there is a catch: Chicago is one of the worst cities in the world to park in. Not in the top three alongside New Delhi or Beijing, but still. In Chicago, parking spots are expensive and on-street spaces are rare. Chicago's parking meters are one of the most expensive in the US, and don't get me started on fines for traffic violations, both strict and severe. A word of advice: take the metro! Leave your car at the hotel though you must pay for parking, or even better, don't come to Chicago with any car at all!
If you plan on trying out many activities that require money, it is important to inform yourself on the various city passes that Chicago has to offer. Depending on your plans, they will save you both time and money. There are different options: the Chicago CityPASS, the Go Card, and Ceetiz passes. All of them offer access to attractions at advantageous prices, discounts on transportation, shopping, and dining, as well as skip-the-line tickets to major attractions. While visiting Chicago, you'll discover the incredible glass patio of the Rookery Building. The building is open Monday to Friday from 7:00 am to 6:00 pm and Saturday from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm. Unfortunately, it is closed on Sundays. You can take photos here, but don't use any tripod or other professional equipment. If you do, it will be considered a photo shoot, which is allowed, but only under certain conditions. The tour takes you inside the Tiffany Dome at the Chicago Cultural Center. Access is free, but the building is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays, and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekends. Don't miss it!

The ideal time to discover Chicago runs from April to October, when the city's continental climate turns milder. Summers are warm, with pleasant temperatures for exploring the shores of Lake Michigan and enjoying the many open-air festivals. Spring and autumn offer perfect conditions for walking around the city, with mild temperatures and the magnificent autumn colours. Winter, particularly harsh with its sub-zero temperatures and heavy snowfalls, may appeal to lovers of snowy landscapes and festive atmospheres, but remains less suited to long urban strolls.
For a first visit to Chicago, ideally plan for three to four days. This will give you time to explore the iconic neighbourhoods, admire the city's exceptional architecture, stroll along the Riverwalk and enjoy the major museums. Two days are enough to see the essentials if your time is limited, but you will have to make choices. With five days or more, you can go deeper into your visit, discover less touristy neighbourhoods and take the time to savour the unique atmosphere of each area. As the city is very spread out, a longer stay also lets you better appreciate its rhythm without rushing.
Chicago has an excellent public transport network that makes a car completely unnecessary. The elevated train, known as the L, efficiently serves the main neighbourhoods and tourist attractions. Buses perfectly complement the network to reach less central areas. For short trips, Divvy bike-sharing is handy, especially along the lake. The city centre is easy to explore on foot, and many neighbourhoods are very pleasant to discover while walking. Taxis and ride-hailing services remain available for greater flexibility. The Ventra card makes using public transport easier with a unified payment system.
Both observation decks offer spectacular but different experiences. The Willis Tower, the taller of the two, features its famous Skydeck with glass boxes suspended over the void, perfect for sensational photos if you don't suffer from vertigo. The 360 Chicago observatory, located in the John Hancock Center, offers a perhaps more photogenic view of the skyline and Lake Michigan, with its TILT attraction that tips visitors out over the void. The choice often comes down to waiting times, generally shorter at 360 Chicago, and to your personal preferences. Both are worth a visit if your budget allows; otherwise, opt for the one whose location fits better into your itinerary for the day.
Chicago is a paradise for food lovers with its iconic specialities. Deep-dish pizza, thick and generously topped, is a must that is eaten like a main course. The Chicago-style hot dog, with its specific toppings and no ketchup, is the quintessential local street food. The Italian beef sandwich, juicy and flavourful, is also worth tasting. Caramel and cheese popcorn mixed together, known as Chicago mix, makes an excellent snack. The city also boasts excellent steakhouses and a diverse culinary scene reflecting its many communities. Don't forget to try the restaurants in the Greektown or Chinatown neighbourhoods for a change of flavours.
The Loop, the historic and financial heart, impresses with its skyscrapers and iconic architecture. Millennium Park and its surroundings are a must for admiring the works of public art. The Magnificent Mile on Michigan Avenue will delight fans of shopping and urban buzz. Lincoln Park charms with its green spaces and free zoo. Wicker Park and Bucktown attract a trendy crowd with their independent shops and cafés. The Ryo audioguide accompanies you as you discover these iconic neighbourhoods with narrated tours that reveal the history and secrets of each area, letting you explore Chicago at your own pace while enjoying captivating anecdotes.
You have several options for reaching the city centre from O'Hare. The Blue Line train remains the most economical way, with a direct trip to the Loop in about forty-five minutes. Shared shuttles offer door-to-door service at a mid-range price, handy if you have a lot of luggage. Taxis and ride-hailing services provide more comfort but at a higher price, especially at peak times. The journey generally takes between thirty minutes and an hour depending on traffic. Remember to check traffic conditions before choosing your mode of transport, as congestion can considerably lengthen the travel time by car.
Chicago remains generally safe for tourists who visit the central, touristy neighbourhoods. The Loop, Magnificent Mile, Lincoln Park and the areas around the lake are usually very busy and well policed. As in any large metropolis, stay alert with your personal belongings and avoid displaying valuables. Some outlying neighbourhoods are best avoided, especially at night. Use public transport, which is safe, particularly during the day. In the evening, opt for taxis or ride-hailing services to get around. Locals are generally welcoming and happy to help visitors. Trust your instincts and follow local recommendations to enjoy your stay with peace of mind.
