Cody park

Right in the heart of downtown Cody, this park is a real gathering place for locals. In the summer, it comes alive with outdoor concerts, Fourth of July celebrations, and more relaxed moments like picnics or time spent with family. But beyond that, the park is also home to several sculptures that reflect part of the town’s history. Just in front of you, the man carrying a young girl on his shoulders is Buffalo Bill Cody with his daughter, Irma Louise. Titled The Spirit of Cody, this sculpture was created in 1999 by local artist Jeff Rudolph, who was born right here in Cody. It shows a more personal side of Buffalo Bill. He’s often remembered as a hunter, a scout, or the showman behind the Wild West Show, but here, he’s simply a father with his child. Through this piece, Rudolph wanted to capture the spirit of the town itself, shaped by the history of the American West, but also by a strong sense of community and family life. Just behind it, at the top of its pedestal, you’ll also notice a sculpture of a bald eagle, another subject the artist often explores. The bald eagle, a national symbol of the United States, represents nature, freedom, and American identity, especially in a place like this, so close to Yellowstone and the wide-open landscapes of Wyoming. Together, these works are a reminder that Cody is not just a gateway to the great landscapes of the West, but also a town deeply connected to its history, its heritage, and its local artists.
