Before crossing the street, take a look to your right. Do you see that enormous metal praying mantis? Standing about 12 meters tall and capable of shooting flames up to six stories high, it marks the entrance to Downtown Container Park. Nicknamed “The Mantis,” this monumental sculpture was first unveiled at the Burning Man festival in 2012 before being permanently installed here. Every evening around sunset, a drum circle gathers at its feet and the creature comes to life during a free fire show that has become one of the most unusual rituals in Downtown Las Vegas. Downtown Container Park opened in 2013 in the heart of the Fremont East District. It was part of the major downtown revitalization projects supported by Tony Hsieh, the former CEO of Zappos. The idea behind the place is simple but bold: create a shopping and entertainment center built entirely from 45 recycled shipping containers, stacked across three levels around an open central courtyard. During the day, families often come here to enjoy the multi-level playground called the Treehouse, which is free and very popular with children. Concerts, outdoor movie nights, and community events regularly take place on the central stage known as The Lawn. For food and drinks, you’ll find a variety of independent bars and restaurants, with a focus on local businesses and original concepts. Entry to the park is free, but after 10 p.m. access becomes restricted to guests aged 21 and over, and the atmosphere shifts from a family-friendly space during the day to a more festive nightlife setting.
