You are standing in the historic heart of Las Vegas. Long before the Strip existed, this is where it all began. In 1905, the first plots of land were sold here, in 1906 the city’s first hotel opened, and by the 1930s, after gambling was legalized, Fremont Street had become the center of casino life in Las Vegas. At the time, the area earned the nickname “Glitter Gulch,” a reference to the glowing neon signs lighting up the street all night long. In the 90s, as the Strip grew more powerful, the downtown casinos decided to reinvent the area to bring visitors back. Car traffic was permanently closed in 1994, and the following year the Fremont Street Experience was created, turning the street into a large pedestrian zone covered by a spectacular canopy. Above you is the famous Viva Vision canopy, one of the largest LED screens in the world. It stretches for more than 400 meters and rises about 27 meters above the street. Every evening starting at 6 p.m., on the hour, a six-minute musical and visual show lights up the entire ceiling. Ultra-high-definition images, a powerful sound system, and immersive effects transform the street into a giant open-air theater under a digital sky. But Fremont Street is not only about the light show. Three stages host free concerts every night of the year. Rock, pop, country, DJ sets — there’s no ticket, no dress code, just the lively atmosphere that defines downtown Las Vegas. For thrill seekers, the SlotZilla Zipline runs nearly 500 meters across the street. In a seated position, or in “Superman” mode where you fly face down, you glide above the crowd and the neon lights just beneath the canopy. The Fremont Street Experience welcomes more than 30 million visitors every year. Access is free 24 hours a day, the concerts are free, and the light shows are free as well. Walking under this canopy means stepping into more than a century of Las Vegas history, where vintage neon and modern technology come together in the very place where the city began.
