No, you haven’t suddenly arrived in Rome, despite the Italian flags and the unmistakable look of Piazza della Famiglia. With its fountain, paving stones, and outdoor seating, this large pedestrian square was designed as a modern Italian piazza in the heart of San Diego. More than anywhere else, it captures the spirit of Little Italy today: lively, welcoming, and made for people to come together.
The neighborhood is also known for its farmers’ market, the Little Italy Mercato. According to the local neighborhood association, it is the largest market of its kind in San Diego County, bringing together more than 200 vendors. Every Saturday morning, the streets fill with stalls selling fresh produce, flowers, prepared foods, and locally made crafts.
For many San Diego residents, it has become a much-loved weekly tradition. So, if you happen to be in the city on a Saturday morning, this is the perfect opportunity to browse the stalls, pick up a few treats, and sample some of the local specialties.
