Looff Hippodrome Carousel

Welcome to one of the Santa Monica Pier’s most charming gems: the historic carousel, housed inside the Looff Hippodrome. Just by looking at the building, it already feels like you’re stepping back in time. With its eclectic style and details inspired by a mix of influences, it was built in 1916 to catch the attention of passersby and to house a ride that would soon become legendary. Inside, it feels like something out of a postcard: twinkling lights, the cheerful sound of a band organ, and above all, beautifully hand-carved wooden horses painted with incredible care. The carousel you see today dates back to 1922. It was built by the Philadelphia Toboggan Company, one of the leading manufacturers of the time. It features 44 horses, along with a few surprises, including a rabbit and a goat, not to mention two chariots, perfect if you’d prefer a gentler ride. You’re welcome to step inside to get a closer look at the carousel, admire the details up close and enjoy the atmosphere, even without taking a ride, but if you feel like hopping on, you can simply buy an individual ticket on site.
