You’ve now arrived at Pacific Park, the amusement park set right on the Santa Monica Pier, with the ocean as its backdrop. It’s one of the few places on the West Coast where you can enjoy rides above the water, in a setting that feels very Southern California. Open since 1996, the park has brought back a long tradition of attractions that have existed here since the early 20th century, when the pier was already a major entertainment destination. Admission is free, and you can simply choose the activities that appeal to you, whether it’s roller coasters, family rides or carnival games. The most recognizable attraction is the Ferris wheel, which has become one of Santa Monica’s symbols. It was the first in the world to run on solar power, and its thousands of LED lights illuminate the pier as soon as night falls. Every year, millions of visitors come here for the atmosphere, the ocean views and this unique mix of amusement park fun and seaside charm that’s become part of the local landscape.
