On your right is the entrance to Cody High School, the town’s main high school. It was founded in 1909, just thirteen years after Cody itself was established by Buffalo Bill, and today it welcomes around 600 students while playing a central role in local life. The large sign you see here is more than just decoration, it’s a real sports hall of fame, listing all the Wyoming state championship titles won by the school’s teams since the 1940s, across sports like wrestling, track and field, football, alpine skiing, and basketball, and for a town this size, that record is especially impressive and a real point of pride. The school also has a fun and distinctive touch when it comes to its mascots: the boys’ teams are called the Broncs, a nod to the wild horses of the American West, while the girls’ teams are known as the Fillies, meaning young mares, a choice that reflects Cody’s deep connection to horse culture, cowboys, and rodeo. Here, school sports are a big part of everyday life, not just an after-school activity, games and competitions bring the whole community together, and every new title earned eventually finds its place on this sign, adding to a tradition that’s been growing for decades.
