Wynn, the twin neighbor of Encore, opened in 2005 on the site of the former Desert Inn, a historic casino that dated back to 1950. Developer Steve Wynn purchased the property and had the old resort demolished to make room for a much more modern and ambitious project. At the time, Wynn became the most expensive hotel complex ever built in the world, with a total cost of 2.7 billion dollars. Three years later, when Encore was added right next door, another 2.4 billion dollars were invested, bringing the total for the two properties to more than 5 billion dollars, which still ranks today among the most expensive hotel developments ever built. Originally, the resort was supposed to be called “Le Rêve,” a reference to a painting by Picasso that belonged to Steve Wynn, but the name was eventually dropped, partly because it was considered difficult for many Americans to pronounce. Unlike many hotels in Las Vegas, Wynn does not follow a specific theme such as Egypt, Paris, or New York. Instead, the idea was to create an elegant setting inspired by the Nevada desert, with its own architectural identity rather than a recreation of an existing place. The logo you can see at the top of the tower is simply Steve Wynn’s personal signature, which became the visual identity of the resort and appears throughout the complex, from the menus to the signs. Inside, the casino covers more than 10,000 square meters and features something quite unusual in Las Vegas: natural light in certain areas, thanks to large windows. Behind the resort you will also find the Lake of Dreams, an artificial lake surrounded by a landscaped hillside more than 30 meters high, where a free show combining lights, music, and projections takes place every evening. Wynn has more than 2,700 rooms and together with its twin tower Encore, forms one of the most prestigious hotel complexes in Las Vegas today.
